This book is all about the 300-foot obelisque that commemorates a critical victory in the American Revolution. The principal narrative was adapted from an article published in Vermont Life magazine in the summer of 1988 on the centennial of the construction of the Bennington Battle Monument.

Now back in print at the special request of Vermont's Division for Historic Preservation, caretakers of the monument, Bennington's Battle Monument: Massive and Lofty tells the story of the concept, fund raising, cornerstone laying - attended by President Hayes, construction, and dedication - attended by President Harrison, of the 300-foot obelisque that commemorates the victory that made possible Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga. It is profusely illustrated with both modern and historical photographs, prints, maps, and ephemera, a poem, a photo essay on climbing to the top to change the airplane warning light, and the running commentary by contemporary journalists in newspaper articles as the monument grew between 1887 and 1889.
