Second edition of the author's Sir Israel Gollancz Memorial Lecture for the British Academy (presented 25 November 1936); originally separately issued in an edition of 500 copies (1 July 1937); followed by inclusion in the Proceedings of the British Academy Vol 22 pp [245]-295 [Bertenstam 60]. His third separate publication & first without collaboration. A revised version of the extended study, Beowulf and the Critics (2002). Note that the statement on tp (verso), "reprinted lithographically in Great Britain at the University Press, Oxford from sheets of the first edition 1958", does not signify that the present issue comprises original sheets (as some imply). Though reissued thus in 1960, 1963 & 1971, the author's highly significant first uncollaborated publication remains elusive in all issues. A very nice copy of an extremely uncommon imprint.
