In 1877, after the Colorado Central Railroad laid tracks through the Little Thompson Valley, a fledgling burg called Berthoud came to life. Because trains hauling cargoes of wheat out of Berthoud labored mightily to ascend the grade to level ground, the community was forced to move. In the winter of 1883–84, the settlement of Berthoud was shifted one mile from its original location on the Little Thompson river bottom to Peter Turner’s homestead on the bluff. Author Mark French uncovers the fascinating history of Berthoud, Colorado, beginning with Native Americans and pre-railroad travelers through the Little Thompson Valley, continuing with the hard work of hearty homesteaders who made the original river bottom settlement a bustling agricultural center and capturing the spirit of a community that developed the town after it was relocated to the bluff.

About the Author: A fifth-generation Coloradoan, Mark French became interested in local history when his junior high school teacher assigned an independent research project. French selected the far-too-broad topic of Berthoud’s history and while rifling through stacks of bound copies of old Berthoud Bulletin newspapers thought, “Someone should have written a book about this.” Now French has. Since those days French has penned over 900 articles on the history of Berthoud and the surrounding Little Thompson Valley of north central Colorado. This book, the result of several years of research, uncovers the early history of French’s native stomping grounds. Mark French is a lifetime member of the Berthoud Historical Society and has served as its president since 2000. He is a charter member of Historic Larimer County and also belongs to the Colorado Cherokee Chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA).
