An In-Depth Guide to Beaches, Mountains, Cities, Communities, Climate, Costs, and Lifestyle
By Roger S Smith
What if choosing the right place to retire in Costa Rica mattered just as much as choosing Costa Rica itself?
Costa Rica offers an extraordinary variety of retirement environments, from Pacific beaches and Caribbean communities to cool mountain towns, Central Valley suburbs, bustling cities, and peaceful rural areas. But every destination comes with its own climate, costs, healthcare access, transportation challenges, infrastructure, housing options, social opportunities, and lifestyle. The community that is perfect for one retiree may be completely wrong for another.
The Best Places to Retire in Costa Rica is designed to help you look beyond beautiful photographs and vacation impressions so you can make a practical, informed decision about where you may want to build your retirement life.
Roger S Smith takes readers on a detailed exploration of Costa Rica's major retirement regions and explains what everyday life can actually look like in different parts of the country. Rather than simply naming one destination as the "best," this book helps you identify the destination that best matches your personal priorities, financial situation, health needs, interests, and long-term retirement vision.
Inside, you will explore Costa Rica's most important retirement regions and communities, including popular beach destinations, the Nicoya Peninsula, the Central and Southern Pacific coast, the Caribbean coast, San José, Escazú, Santa Ana, Heredia, Alajuela, Grecia, Atenas, San Ramón, and other mountain, valley, suburban, and smaller-town communities.
You will discover how different regions compare in terms of climate, housing, affordability, healthcare, transportation, shopping, restaurants, recreation, infrastructure, accessibility, and social life. You will also learn why a community that looks perfect during a vacation may not necessarily be the right place for full-time retirement.
This book explores important questions such as how coastal living compares with mountain living, whether you can realistically retire without owning a vehicle, how access to healthcare changes by region, why infrastructure matters, how to evaluate safety and everyday convenience, and how your choice of community can affect your overall cost of living.
You will learn how to evaluate:
• Costa Rica's major retirement regions and communities
• Beach, mountain, valley, urban, suburban, small-town, and rural lifestyles
• Dry-season and rainy-season climate differences
• Housing costs and regional affordability
• Public and private healthcare access
• Hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, dental care, and emergency services
• Roads, traffic, buses, taxis, ride services, and private transportation
• International airport accessibility and domestic travel
• Electricity, water, internet, cellular service, and waste collection
• Shopping, banking, restaurants, recreation, and everyday conveniences
• Costa Rican neighborhoods, culture, and local community life
• Expatriate communities, clubs, organizations, and social opportunities
• Beaches, mountains, nature, outdoor recreation, and lifestyle preferences
• Renting versus buying a retirement home
• The long-term importance of healthcare and infrastructure
Most importantly, this guide helps you create a personalized decision-making process. You will learn how to establish your retirement priorities, create a realistic budget, compare candidate communities, and conduct meaningful research.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
