Author Ray Saunders began transforming his garden in the early 1990s. Throughout the years he has watched it grow and mature during which time he has been able to gain much knowledge as to the preferences of each plant.

During the 1990s, Ray turned his attention to gardening, studying many rare and unusual plants as well as the more common varieties. He then landscaped and redeveloped his own three-acre garden, stocking it with many rare and unusual species together with the better-known ones, learning much from the plantsmen and nurserymen that he sought out for his plants. Also, being a keen photographer, he has taken photos of his many plants as the garden has matured.
