Beyond Cinema: The Art of Projection Films, Videos and Installations from 1963 to 2005

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by moving images. In art as in daily life, they have long since developed a life "beyond the cinema," scuttling the conventions of dark auditoriums for images projected onto walls, staged in specially-designed environments, and aggregated in multiples. Beyond Cinema centers around approximately 25 important film and video works, primarily the major installations of the 1990s, including the ravishing projections of Pipilotti Rist, the existentialist image of the body put forward by Bruce Nauman, the psychologically charged filmic spaces of Eija-Liisa Ahtila and the highly conceptual installations of Rodney Graham. Each elaborates on notions of the projected image that were developed in the 1960s, and groundbreaking works from Marcel Broodthaers, Dan Graham and Valie Export are presented to contextualize investigations of identity and body image, film cooperatives, representations of time and other topics.

As curator of the Pamela and Richard Kramlich Collection for the past 8 years, Eamon has helped the Kramlichs build their collection and overseen the research activities of their foundation New Art Trust in San Francisco, California. Prior to this, as Assistant Curator of Film and Video at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Eamon curated an exhibition of video installations by Julie Becker and Christian Marclay. In 2002, along with Klaus Biesenbach and Barbara London, he co-curated "Video Acts: Single Channel Works from the Collection of Pamela and Richard Kramlich and New Art Trust," which traveled to ICA London in 2003. In September 2006, Eamon mounted a major exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof fur Gegenwart--Berlin entitled "Beyond Cinema: The Art of Projection, Films, Videos and Installations, 1963-2005" which he co-curated with Stan Douglas, Joachim Jaeger and Gabriele Knapstein. During the past decade, Eamon has developed and commissioned web-based artists' projects and a variety of interactive media projects, including film and video installations by Stan Douglas, Gary Hill, and Bill Viola, among others. As Director of New Art Trust he has organized and participated in a number of symposia on media art preservation, including "TechArcheology: Preserving Media Installation Art" in early 2000 and the ongoing Media Matters project hosted by the Tate's major research site. His newly released book Anthony McCall: the Solid Light Films and Related Works was published by Northwestern University Press, Evanston IL and Steidl, Germany.
