There are surprisingly few good handbooks on how to get into graduate school, so this is a welcome addition to the literature. It is organized into chapters, each devoted to one of the authors' ten essential steps to graduate admission. Among the steps are matching a program to the individual; gaining an understanding of the graduate admissions process; linking a graduate program to a career goal; determining how strong one's academic credentials are; strengthening writing skills; preparing the application; and more. Each chapter is amply illustrated with case studies, lists of highly rated programs, and other practical material. The authors have done a good job of blending solid recommendations in a form that is well suited to their basic goal.
