Beyond the Reluctant Move

Do you have a loved one currently living in residential care or likely to move into care in the near future?

Do you work in aged care and find that many of your clients experience emotional changes during the transition but you are uncertain how to best help them?

The transition into residential aged care is often overwhelming - for the older person and their families. However, there is little information available for loved ones and aged care workers on how to provide emotional support during the change.

Until recently, most older people received in-home care from family - but over the last two decades, this has changed. An ageing population, a higher prevalence of dementia, an increase in the retirement age and the burden of financial commitments have seen a boom in the number of people moving into residential aged care.

Aged Care Psychology Consultant, Dr Julie Bajic Smith has dedicated her career to improving the wellbeing of older people. In this book she shares her proven and easy to follow non-drug strategies for residential care settings that focus on the strengths and abilities of older people, rather than their limitations.

In this book you'll learn:

• The risk factors that impact emotional health in late life
• The role of families in promoting wellbeing in older people
• The importance of self-care for carers
• Strategies to provide positive and meaningful care.

This book contains practical wellbeing tips that can be implement today - and is essential reading for the aged care workforce, family members and loved ones who believe every older person deserves to be heard, understood and loved.
