Beyond Strumming - Acoustic Guitar Private Lessons Series (Book/Online Media)

Beyond Strumming - Acoustic Guitar Private Lessons Series (Book/Online Media) by guitarist and educator Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers is an acoustic guitar instruction book with downloadable online video. It is created for guitarists who want more variety and expression in their accompaniment. Rather than relying on the same patterns from song to song, the book explores ways to build fresh guitar parts that complement the music and help songs shine.

Across 20 lessons, Rodgers explores techniques and musical ideas for creating more dynamic accompaniment parts. Topics include deepening grooves, discovering new chord shapes, working with different picking styles, exploring alternate tunings, and using partial capos. Downloadable video files accompany the written lessons, giving guitarists multiple ways to explore the concepts and apply them during practice.

The value of Beyond Strumming lies in its emphasis on building a broader accompaniment toolkit rather than repeating familiar approaches. Exploring chord shapes, picking ideas, grooves, tunings, and partial capo techniques can encourage greater variety in practice and provide new possibilities when shaping guitar parts for songs. These techniques can be adapted across different songs and musical settings. The combination of written lessons and video content also supports focused study of the musical material.

Beyond Strumming offers a focused resource for acoustic guitarists interested in accompaniment, creative guitar parts, and a wider range of sounds and textures. It can support ongoing learning, practice, and preparation for playing songs in performance settings, while also making a thoughtful gift for a guitarist interested in exploring accompaniment beyond familiar strumming patterns.
