Horton and Reid report on a relatively new phenomenon in corporate America: restructuring and its effects on middle managers. Until recently the white-collar workforce remained above the effects of economic downturns. But now, with early retirements and downsizing, the authors contend that middle managers have found themselves caught between the boardroom and the employees they are expected to supervise. Restructuring and cutbacks have also created a leadership vacuum in the middle ranks and have widened the trust gap between managers and their employers. In the hopes of closing this gap, the authors present several workable strategies. An excellent book for a wide range of audiences.
