A Bibliographical Account of the Principal Works Relating to English Topography

A Bibliographical Account Of The Principal Works Relating To English Topography by William Upcott. This work serves as a bibliographical reference catalog, focusing on English topography and county histories. The edition described is Part I of a four-part series (Vol. I), with a dedication to Dawson Turner and a substantial Preface. Published circa 1818 by the London Institution, it aims to guide collectors, scholars, and bibliographers through principal writings on English topography, documenting notices, editions, and availability, including rare works and large-paper copies, and outlining plans for continued expansion to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and the smaller British islands. The volume outlines the project’s structure: a Dedication and Preface, Addenda et Corrigenda, General Topography, and County History (alphabetically arranged) with detailed bibliographic entries. It begins with county entries (e.g., Bedfordshire, Berkshire) and notes on plate lists, editions, and cross-references, illustrating a scholarly, illustrated approach to county histories and topographical literature across late 18th–early 19th century England.
