Smith was the editor of American Bungalow News and associate editor of American Bungalow magazine. Smith co-owns The Arts and Crafts Press in Berkeley, California, publishers of The Tabby: A Chronicle of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick founded the Camp Fire Girls in 1910, along with his wife and a small group of educators. A sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America, the Camp Fire Girls were incorporated in 1912. Gulick, an advocate of physical fitness for young people, also had a role in helping found the Boy Scouts of America and played an important part in the early development of the YMCA.
