Bifacial Solar Technology: Unlocking the Double-Sided Power of the Sun

This book delves into the fundamental irradiance components critical to the performance of bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems. Unlike conventional monofacial panels, bifacial modules harness solar energy from both their front and rear surfaces, making their output highly dependent on the interplay between direct, diffuse, and ground-reflected (albedo) irradiance. Each component exhibits unique behaviors influenced by environmental conditions such as atmospheric scattering, ground reflectivity, and system design parameters, including module orientation, tilt, and height. Understanding these components is essential for accurate energy yield modeling, system optimization, and maintenance planning. By analyzing how these irradiance sources contribute to bifacial energy generation, this chapter provides the foundational knowledge necessary for maximizing bifacial gain and improving the economic and operational viability of bifacial solar installations.
