Synopsis
World Poetry Publishing brings you a first book for challenged youth and adults, the amazing Big Bessie Stories! Dictated by the award winning “specially-abled” Sharon Rowe and featuring the HandyDART Heroine Big Bessie, a talking, flying mini bus that never takes no for an answer, this book is full of humor, taking the reader through a series of wondrous adventures. The stories fulfill a long term dream by the author. Illustrator Kwame Yirenkyi brings Big Bessie and her friends such as Baby Nicki and Sir Thomas Rigg Kimball her cat, to life on the pages. There is some excitement about a possible animated series! The stories have been read aloud in community centers, libraries and classes with great success, to children, youth and adults. They have inspired many “challenged” people to find their creative voice. Sharon wants you to know that you have a creativity in you just waiting to come out. Comments: Linda Jones, “I love Sharon’s stories and so do the participants at Read Ability Stories at the Surrey Library. Keep writing Sharon!” David Smith, “Sharon is an amazing woman. She has a storyteller’s mind and the tenacity to finish her work. She also has a wonderful sense of humour which is highlighted by Big Bessie and her gang.”
About the Author
Author Sharon Rowe's story is one of triumph over so many disabilities, Trisomy 13, hearing, vision, speech and motor difficulties. She has an indomitable spirit and despite all her challenges does not see herself as challenged! Today this pretty, self-assured young woman bears little resemblance to the four year old with over-whelming challenges that came to live with Ariadne Sawyer from an emergency home. Winner of numerous awards and an important part of her community, she was chosen as a person of distinction in the 25th anniversary of the Rick Hanson tour. Awards: · Rick Hanson 25 year Medal Bearer Medallion 2013. · Special Olympics, 7th Annual Bowling Tournament · World Poetry Volunteer of the year, 2010. · World Poetry Empowered Volunteer Crystal · Simon Fraser Self Advocate Award · World Poetry reading Series Special Volunteer award · World Poetry Empowered Writer award. Sharon has been a loyal volunteer for World Poetry for many years. She also has created over 500 paper flowers which have been given to poets and performers from Canada and around the world. * Sharon has around 20 Handy Dart stories, one of which was published in the VVC newsletter a few years ago and some are in The World Poetry Anthology 2001. She has also had her stories read at the Vancouver Public Library, the 411 Seniors Centre, AfrikaDey, Surrey Centre Library, Poetry around the World, The Renaissance Bookstore and numerous other venues.
