A thorough memoir of a Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony, in the publisher's original binding. John Montagu (1797-1853) was Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony between 1843 and 1853. He famously had a dispute with polar explorer Sir John Franklin, which resulted in Montagu's suspension from office when Montagu was Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land and Franklin was Lieutenant Governor. Franklin was also removed from office, and set off on the Franklin expedition to the Canadian Arctic, which was lost in 1845. Montagu had great success in the Cape Colony, with a town and a pass named in his honour.Illustrated with a number of full page lithographs, as well as a full frontispiece of the author.In the publisher's original binding. In a full cloth binding. Rebacked, with the original spine laid down. Externally generally smart, some fading to the spine and shelf wear to the extremities.
