Biomes and Ecosystems

Gr 7 Up-Grouping topics around five biomes (marine/oceanic, inland aquatic, desert, forest, and grassland/tundra/human), this set offers 35 signed overviews on subtopics relevant to the various areas, and 500 two- to four-page signed essays on specific locations or ecosystems such as the Everglades, the Kalahari Desert, or the Mid-Pacific Gyre (the "Trash Vortex," where mostly plastic debris is trapped by circular oceanic currents). Essays include references to relatively recent events such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010) and the Three Gorges Dam (2011); they close with further-reading suggestions. Topics are handled with scientific detachment, while still portraying developments such as forest clear-cutting and global warming as threats to the world's ecosystems. Words that may be unfamiliar are defined in the context of the article, as well as in the glossary. The time line notes events through Hurricane Sandy (October 2012). Purchase of the set includes all-school access to a database version that is part of Salem Science. Once the subscription is activated, students can search the material by key words or phrases or use the online topic finder. Most of the online articles have at least one full-color photo, while photos in the print version are black-and-white. Offering both breadth and depth, this title makes a solid choice for ecosystem research. This four-volume set covers the five major biomes: “Marine and Oceanic”; “Inland Aquatic”; “Desert”; “Forest”; and “Grassland, Tundra and Human.” The first volume covers the topic in 39 essays, offering a detailed overview of biomes and ecosystems around the world, covering broad topics such as “Coral Reefs and Seagrass Beds,” “Montane Meadows,” “Polar Deserts,” and “Tropical Seasonal Forests.” Volumes 2–4 cover the specific ecosystems within these biomes. More than 500 signed A–Z entries range from 500 to 3,500 words in length and include bibliographic citations for further reading. These entries focus on specific topics, including Andaman Sea, Celtic broadleaf forests, Ecotourism, Hudson River, Mana pools, and Water management. Each entry is signed, and many have black-and-white captioned illustrations. (None of the illustrations are in color, which is disappointing.) The table of contents for the set is found in each volume, and there is a “Topic Finder” in volume 1. Volume 4 contains a chronology; a glossary; a “Resource Guide,” listing books, journals, and websites; and a comprehensive subject index. This set is intended for high-school students but would be useful to patrons of public and academic libraries as well. The articles are well written and cover the biomes and ecosystems in depth. Purchase of this set includes complimentary access to the online database. Recommended as a good addition to high-school and public library collections. --Anne Hoffman
