Biotechnological Transformation for Sugarcane Management

This new book focuses on the core aspects of sugarcane biotechnological transformation and advanced approaches for augmenting plant development and production through intrinsic/extrinsic variations. It presents comprehensive and updated information on sugarcane crop management in response to adverse climatic variables for sustainable production, discussing innovative interventions for how sugarcane copes with environmental stresses and the role of biochar on sugarcane crop improvement at different growth periods during stress. Management of abiotic stresses in sugarcane through conventional and molecular approaches is also covered as are developments in biotechnological approaches and their impact on sugarcane output. Various techniques used in different countries for improving sugarcane output, handling pests, and improvement of harvest quality are also reviewed. Different approaches that support improvement of sugarcane as a renewable source of bioenergy are discussed as well.

Krishan K. Verma, PhD, is a Foreign Expert at the Sugarcane Research Institute of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences as well as at the Sugarcane Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Genetic Improvement/Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Biotechnology and Genetic Improvement (Guangxi) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China. His research focuses on environmental toxicology, bioengineering modeling, plant physiology, molecular biology, physiological and molecular adaptation strategies of plants to stressful environment, etc. He has published many scientific articles as well as books and book chapters. He received the prestigious Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research in Agricultural Sciences in 2021.

Xiu-Peng Song, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Sugarcane Research Institute, Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Genetic Improvement and the Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Biotechnology and Genetic Improvement under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Nanning, Guangxi, China. He has presided over four projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, China, and participated in 16 projects that involved national and international cooperation. He has won six awards and has published over 65 scientific publications, several book chapters, and one book.

Munna Singh, PhD, served as Vice-Chancellor at Chandra Shekher Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, India, and is currently a Professor and Head, Botany, and is also Chairman of the Board of Studies, Agriculture, at the University of Lucknow, India. He was formerly Professor and Head, Plant Physiology at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, for nearly two decades. He has completed many research projects and published over 100 research journals, papers, as well as several books. He has received several awards and fellowships.

Jian-Ming Wu, PhD, is a Professor at the Sugarcane Research Institute, Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Genetic Improvement and the Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Biotechnology and Genetic Improvement (Guangxi) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Nanning, Guangxi, China. He has presided over and participated in many research projects, and has published more than 120 scientific publications with five granted invention patents.

Yang-Rui Li, PhD, is Director of the Sugarcane Research Center, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and is also Chief Expert of the National Joint Research Program for Elite Sugarcane Variety Development in China. He was formerly Professor of Agronomy at Guangxi Agricultural University; Vice-President of Guangxi University; President of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. He is the President of the International Association for Professionals of Sugar and Integrated Technologies; Vice-President of the Society for Sugar Research and Promotion; and President of the Chinese Sugarcane Industry Association for Technological Innovation. A prolific author and researcher, he has received many awards for his work.
