Add to basketScientists of 16 European cities describe the birdlife of the towns in which they live and work. The urban habitats present in the cities have arisen by a combination of their geographical and climatic position and their development over the last 1000 years. This is the first book to describe any aspect of the natural history of these man-made habitats across Europe. There is only one truly urban bird - the Feral Pigeon, which has evolved from the adaptation of and considerable genetic changes in the Rock Dove to become the only bird whose occurence is restricted to urban areas. The overall species diversity is higher than in the rural environment. In contrast the diversity within single habitats is significantly lower. The abundance in all urban habitats is much higher than in comparable habitats in the countryside. Treated cities: Lisbon, Valencia, Brussels, Florence, Rome, Hamburg, Berlin, Bonn, Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Warsaw, Lubin, Sofia, St. Petersburg & Moscow St. Katharinen. Ginster Verlag. 450 pp., 92 black-and-white maps and figures, 33 tables and appendices, hardcover gr. 8 [17.7 x 25.5 cm].
