Oversized. Black cloth with elaborate silver decoration and lettering. Upper front corners are bumped, and inner front corners (closest to spine) are rubbed to boards. Spine is almost completely missing, with only the portion showing the title and volume intact, otherwise exposed mesh. Text is clean and bright, no marks. Profusely illustrated throughout with full-page full-color plates. Sewn binding is not quite tight. "The text is prepared, with the view of giving the children as clear an idea as possible, of haunts, habits, characteristics and such other information as will lead them to love birds and delight in their study and acquaintance."
