From the Publisher
Birmingham Gunmakers is the most complete work ever published on this famous British gunmaking city. Tate gives a thorough overview of the origins of the Birmingham gun trade as well as a history of how the city came to the foreground as one of the sporting-gun manufacturing centers of the world. He covers the well-known makers as well as the obscure-those who have long since ceased production and vanished into the mists of time. Birmingham has produced some of the most famous names in the world of sporting guns such as W.W. Greener, William Powell, Westley Richards, and many others. All these are thoroughly covered, and the book is illustrated with some of the finest examples of their craftsmanship. The Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House, buying and evaluating a Birmingham gun, as well as a glossary of gunmaker terms are also covered. An invaluable book for anyone interested in fine sporting arms.
