About this title

Synopsis

Recounts the shocking story of an American farmer who, while being sought by government authorities for tax evasion, murdered three federal marshals and later died in a shootout

Reviews

Two lawmen were killed by a virulently anti-Semitic, antigovernment group called the Posse Comitatus when they attempted to arrest one of its members, farmer Gordon Kahl, for income tax evasion in Medine, North Dakota in 1983. Kahl fled and was killed in a gunfight five months later. Concoran, who covered these events as a journalist, tells an illuminating and chilling story of the growth of violence-prone, right-wing hate groups which feed on the farm crisis facing Middle America. See Bruce Brown's The Lone Tree Tragedy (LJ 6/15/89) for another case of rural violence.--Ed.. The murderous activities of fundamentalist neo-Nazis like Kahl deserve wide exposure. Recommended.
