Synopsis

From the "Tars and pitches, in popular terminology, have seemed to embrace all black sticky materials, including those occurring in nature. By definition they should be limited to manufactured materials usually obtained as secondary products in the destructive distillation of various organic substances. This volume describes coal and water- and oil-gas tars and their pitches. These products are very different in properties and behavior from ordinary asphalts, even though there are a few thermal products derived from crude oils or petroleum fractions that are very much like coal tars and pitches in properties and behavior. One difference, even in these, seems to be in the lower content of highly carbonaceous material, the so-termed C1 fraction, although this is capable of being controlled to a low level in coal tar pitches to be used as saturants... Included in Volume 3 is a chapter on water-gas and oil-gas tars. These materials are distinct from coal tars and, although now only produced in very minor amounts, may become current again if manufactured gas should become more in demand. The general plan of Volume 3 is much the same as that of Volume 2, covering history, economics, manufacture, properties, and applications. Style again varies between chapters, and there is some duplication of subject matter. But each chapter is self-sufficient and this, it is hoped, will overbalance any excess of verbosity."
