Now the new, updated, and expanded edition of this uniquely comprehensive guide to college selection--and success--written for African-American students and their counselors will be a welcome addition to the school and public library shelf and the college-bound student's personal collection. Up-to-date through the 1994-1995 school year, the directory section of this edition includes the most current information--tuition fees, enrollment figures, contact names, and the like--for each institution listed. Thirty-six colleges and universities have been added to this edition, expanding the total number covered to over 950. Popular features from the first edition of the Guide return and provide a wealth of information and a step-by-step guide to preparing for, selecting, and succeeding in college; autobiographical essays by notable African Americans on how they succeeded in college; and, of course, the completely revised and updated directory of more than 950 colleges and universities. Following a Foreword by Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Part I, "How to Succeed in College," features 14 hard-hitting contributed essays geared to the needs of the Black student during the college selection process and the first year of college. Of special interest are essays on the Black student athlete, choosing a Black college or an integrated college, financing a college education, connecting with students from Africa and the Caribbean, getting along with non-blacks on campus, handling academic stress, study habits and hints, and affirmative action. Part II,"How I Did It," features 27 short autobiographical sketches by Black Americans on how they succeeded in college. Part III, "College and University Directory," includes completely updated information on more than 950 U.S. colleges and universities plus the name of the Black recruiter, percentage of Black students enrolling and percentage of Black students who graduate, percentage of student athletes who graduate, and Black organizations. In addition to the directory, Part III includes evaluations and listings of the 50 most prestigious U.S. undergraduate institutions with detailed information on programs and activities of special interest to Black students, listings of 66 historically Black colleges and universities and evaluations of the top 10, profiles of 48 universities in Africa and the Caribbean, and information on national Black Greek letter organizations.
