About this Item
Photo album of a Black family from Trinidad & Tobago. 1920s-40s. The Album has 58 silver gelatin photographs of a family in fine clothing at a wedding, photos of babies, school days, and travels and everyday life. The men wear large suits popular in style in the 1930s-40s. One woman stands in front of a twin turbine propeller airplane. Two girls wear religious garb around a statue of Joseph and Jesus. There is a New Years photo of a whole family and a couple group shots of eight black nurses in front of of a Trinidad hospital. One photo of Quayside dock in Tobago. Most photos appear to be taken in Trinidad & Tobago, and depict a local family, which is much scarcer than travel albums of outsiders visiting the area. Many photos are studio shots, since at that time most local people would still go to photo studios to get photography done. One man in the family joined the military, and wears his pre-independance white navy uniform, another has a photo in his 40's Trinidadian police uniform, also one female member of the family became a nun. The photos are all black and white and from 1920s-40s, but there is also a single loose 1970s color photo of a grand mother (who most have been one of the younger girls photos in the 1930's) with her smiling grand daughter. Trinidad and Tobago obtained independence in 1962, so after all but one of he photographs. Front cover separated but present, pages and photos are in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 19662
