Item description from seller

Black paper covered boards in unclipped jacket. 303 pp. A collection of essays originally submitted to a 1739 contest held by the Bordeaux's Royal Academy of Sciences, a contest that asked for the source of "blackness." This included physical cause of blackness and African hair, as well as the cause of "Black degeneration." Each essay includes headnotes discussing the text, with the documents representative of the origins of the concept of race, and anti-Black racism and colorism in the West. VERY GOOD condition. Minor soiling and scuffing to the jacket. Light fading and edgewear to the book.
