Maroon w/gilt lettering and elaborate spine decoration. Minor bumping and light rub to head and heel of spine. Closed outside edges, endpapers and first three pages of text show light foxing, the occasional spot throughout. Text is otherwise clean and bright. Tissue guarded frontis and two other portraits. Named for The Fairy Blackstick in Thackeray's 'The Rose and the Ring' , this book is a collection of essays which the author (the daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray) explains are"certain things in which she was interested; old books, young people, schools of practical instruction, rings, roses, sentimental affairs, etc.,etc.".
