Die Handlung vollzieht sich von 1854 bis 1855. Zu Beginn des Romans ist H�l�ne bereits 18 Monate Witwe. Ihr Mann ist unmittelbar nach ihrer gemeinsamen Ankunft in Paris erkrankt und acht Tage darauf gestorben. Gemeinsam mit ihrer elfj�hrigen Tochter Jeanne lebt H�l�ne im Pariser Stadtteil Passy. Mutter und Tochter haben seitdem die Wohnung kaum verlassen. Sie kennen die Stadt fast nur durch die Sicht von ihren Fenstern aus. �mile �douard Charles Antoine Zola (1840-1902) war ein franz�sischer Schriftsteller und Journalist. Zola gilt als einer der gro�en franz�sischen Romanciers des 19. Jahrhunderts und als Leitfigur und Begr�nder der gesamteurop�ischen literarischen Str�mung des Naturalismus. Zugleich war er ein sehr aktiver Journalist, der sich auf einer gem��igt linken Position am politischen Leben beteiligte.
