About this Item
Large collection of The Blood-Horse, the definitive and long-running journal of horse racing, published during the Golden Age of Horse Racing, when Secretariat and Ruffian, two of the greatest racehorses ever, were leaving their also-rans in the dust. Issues include: 1973 (August, September, October, November, December; 1974 (January, February, June, July September, October, November); 1975: (January, June, July, November. Many photos, articles and detailed race results of these famous horses and more. General content includes technical articles on care and breeding of racehorses, histories and blood lines of horses, full-page ads of breeders with photos of horses (numerous Claiborne ads) and much more. Of special note are the January, 1974 issue with Secretariat as Horse of the Year on the cover, and, in the November, 1975 issue a lengthy, detailed, photo-illustrated - and heartbreaking - article on Ruffian's accident at the Belmont, the hours of agony that followed, and her ultimate, tragic euthanization. Was she the greatest racehorse ever? She never lost a race, but we'll never know just how truly great she was. Legendary jockey Bill Shoemaker, perhaps the greatest ever in his own right, makes numerous appearances. IMPORTANT NOTE: All issues are French editions with text in French. However, many translations to English have been excised from the corresponding US editions and tipped in with small dots of glue in one corner so as to facilitate reading (and in most cases removal, if desired). Almost without exception, these US clips consist of the most important content. Also included are a dozen or so copies of relevant articles and photos from other publications originally laid into the French issues. Collection purchased from the estate of a notable thoroughbred breeder in Florida, who preferred to remain anonymous - and this request be honored in this case. His original notations are scattered throughout. Shipping is at our standard rate but significantly reduced from actual cost, so please factor this in. All issues tight and complete as issued, a few with small, light stains to covers and light to minimal shelf wear. A one-of-a kind, unusually important lot of race horsing history. Photographs of or additional information about this grouping are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
