Item description from seller

No date (c.1880). 128 pages. Illustrated. 140x90mm. Original dark ribbed cloth lettered and decorated in blind. *A President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and consultant surgeon to St Vincent's Hospital Dublin, Edward Dillon Mapother (1835 -1908) took an increasing interest in the poor public health conditions in his native city. Dublin's poor quality, overcrowded housing with its deficient ventilation and imperfect sewerage, combined with a scarcity of wholesome food and lack of physical exercise was seen by him as a major contributing cause of preventable diseases and deaths. This scarce ephemeral school text was produced to 'put the useful facts about themselves in such easy words that boys and girls might learn the worth of a sound body and of a sound mind.'* A near fine copy of the rare fifth and probably final edition of this delicate children's text, without library stamps, inscriptions or other markings. Images available on request. *** Lower than average weight - shipping charge will be reduced at processing stage of order. ***.
