About the Author

Donald Peter Moriarty II is a retired lieutenant colonel of artillery, who served in the US Army from 1957 to 1980. A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, currently residing in California, Moriarty was a system engineer and program manager with Hughes Electronics Corporation in Fullerton, California, from 1980 to 1995. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from Louisiana State University and a master's degree in history from Florida Atlantic University. He also studied patristics at Keble College of Oxford University in England. An ardent genealogist, Moriarty became interested in the Orleans Light Horse more than thirty years ago when he began compiling the life story of his great-grandfather William Ambrose Moriarty, a member of the cavalry company. When he found it virtually impossible to locate any meaningful data on the Light Horse, Moriarty decided to compile the unit's history himself, coaxing from disparate records a story hidden for 150 years.
