Body Science The Toilet Time Experiments

Help children understand their body's toilet signals with fun, hands-on science experiments

Some school aged children can find it difficult to notice or respond to the body cues that tell us it is time for a wee or poo. This engaging and practical book, written by Developmental Psychologist Dr Kate McGarry, turns toilet learning into a playful science adventure.

Through three simple, step-by-step experiments, children become the scientists of their own bodies, learning to notice how food and drink affect wees and poos, and what it feels like when their body is ready for the toilet.

 What's inside

✅ Experiment 1: Discover how the amount of water you drink changes your wees and poos

✅ Experiment 2: See how different foods affect your poos and wees

✅ Experiment 3: Try out colourful rainbow wees to make toilet time fun and memorable

This book supports children who struggle with interoception and recognising toilet urges. It is ideal for neurodivergent children or any child needing extra support with toileting. It encourages independence, curiosity, and body awareness, and is written in a friendly, child-centred style to reduce stress and build confidence.

Perfect for parents, carers, teachers, and therapists, this unique book helps children connect with their body cues in a way that is fun, educational, and confidence-boosting.

Dr. Kate McGarry is a Developmental Psychologist who gained her Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham in 2014.The author specialises in early childhood development and issues around toileting in children. Dr. McGarry has two young children, one of whom suffered from stool withholding. As a result, the author used her research skills and knowledge of developmental psychology to create an evidence-based approach to tackling this condition. Dr. Kate McGarry has published this approach in her book "Stool Withholding: A Practical guide for Parents" to help other parents tackle this condition. She has also created other interactive children books which use the character "Squiggy the Poo" to help children engage in potty training and to encourage pooing on the toilet.
