Excerpt from The Bone-Marrow: A Cytological Study Forming an Introduction to the Normal and Pathological Histology of the Tissue, More Especially With Regard to Blood Formation, Blood Destruction, Etc

This volume represents the results of a portion of the work done during my tenure of the Crichton Research Scholarship in Pathology in the University of Edinburgh, to which University it was submitted as a Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine, and awarded a Gold Medal. It was also communicated by Professor Schafer to the Royal Society of London, before which learned body I had the honour of reading it on June 14, 1906. Part of my work upon the bone-marrow has also formed the subject of communications given to the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland at its Inaugural Meeting held in Manchester on July 14, 1906, and at the Third General Meeting of the Society in Edinburgh on June 8, 1907. The research was carried out in the Laboratory of the Pathological Department of the University, and to Professor Greenfield my' grateful thanks are due, not only for granting me every facility in con nection with the. Experimental part of the work, and for the free use of clinical and post-mortem material from his wards in the Royal Infirmary, but also for the unfailing interest he has shown, and for much kindly advice he has given me, during the carrying out of my researches in his laboratory.

I am indebted to the Carnegie Trust for a grant of £50 towards the publication expenses, more especially in connection with the illustration of the book.
