Boo! Stories to Make You Jump

A collection of scary stories and poems, with an emphasis on monsters, ghosts, and witches.

Grade 3-4 --A compilation of 17 not terribly scary short stories and poems illustrated with Clark's lively pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings. The traditional stories include such favorites as "The Hairy Toe," "The Three Billy-Goats-Gruff," and "The King o' the Cats." Poems are also standard fare. Most of the selections are easily found in other anthologies or in single-volume versions. The book appears, at first glance, to be a picture book, and indeed, young children will respond favorably upon hearing it. However, the length of the stories, the large typeface, and the subtly humorous illustrations make it ideally suited for newly independent readers. --Molly Kinney, North Dade Regional Lib . , Miami, FL
