The Celtic Magazine by A. and W. Mackenzie presents a survey of Highland history, language, and culture through essays, correspondence, folklore, and biographical sketches. The issue foregrounds legal and land questions in 18th– and 19th-century Scotland, detailing Vesting Act disputes, feudal landholding patterns, crofting economics, and debates over tenancy and landlord responsibilities. It analyzes destitution and emigration in the Highlands, arguing for radical land-use reform and imperial action to reclaim waste land while preserving Highland populations. Cultural history sections explore battles, clan memory, Ossian debates, Gaelic literature, and plans for a Celtic professorship, alongside Kilchurn Castle and Gaelic poetry. Editorials outline a conservative yet reform-minded program for farming, forestry, and education within a non-sectarian framework and chart Volume III’s aims. Across narrative history, folklore, and critical pieces, the magazine celebrates Highland resilience, language, and culture and advocates practical measures to sustain Gaelic heritage and rural life.
