Mutual Knowledge In A Future State, Offered As. Consolation Under The Loss Of Friends, A Sermon by William Dodd. This 18th?century sermon, delivered by Dodd, who is identified as Chaplain to Dr. Squire, late Bishop of St. David’s, and Chaplain in Ordinary to His Majesty, offers consolation to those who mourn. It centers on 2 Samuel 12:23 and argues that death is a passage to a future life in which believers will meet and know their departed friends. The discourse maintains that mutual knowledge and fellowship continue in heaven, guided by revelation and Christian faith, and it discusses the nature of the soul’s continuity, the restoration of life, and the happiness of eternal reunion. It also addresses objections about memory and the possibility of knowledge in the afterlife, drawing on New Testament imagery of the heavenly city and the community of saints. The tract includes an Appendix discussing other scholarly opinions and a biographical sketch of Bishop Squire, reflecting 18th?century Anglican reflections on death, consolation, and eternity.
