The Book of Bratislava (Paperback)

Located at the meeting point between Slovakia, Austria and Hungary, Bratislava is a city bursting with history. From its liberation from the Nazis in 1945 to the establishment of a communist regime and the Velvet Divorce of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia’ s capital is a fertile ground for literature that seeks to make sense of its complex past and uncertain future. Whether autobiographical tales set in the aftermath of WWII, or contemporary narratives of contemplation, the stories in this anthology are threaded with echoes of Bratislava gone by, manifesting as personal memories, government officials or even actual ghosts. Translated from the Slovak by Katarina Gephardt, Jonathan Gresty, Paul Kaye, Janet Livingstone, John Minahane, Magdalena Mullek, Charles Sabatos, David Short, Isabel Stainsby. Translated from the Hungarian by Peter Sherwood.
