The Book of the Chapter : Or, Monitorial Instructions, in the Degrees of Mark, Past and Most Excellent Master, and the Holy Royal Arch

The Book Of The Chapter : Or, Monitorial Instructions, In The Degrees Of Mark, Past And Most Excellent Master, And The Holy Royal Arch by Albert G. Mackey, M.D. is a comprehensive 19th-century Masonic manual. Drawing on the historical traditions and ritual components of the Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and Royal Arch degrees, Mackey offers both ceremonial instruction and interpretive commentary. The work includes Preface contextualizing Monitor literature, detailed sections on symbolisms (Chisel, Mallet, Keystone), historical summaries of temple building and the Mark and Royal Arch legends, prayers, charges, and practical forms for opening lodges, investing officers, and grand chapter rituals. The text aims to provide “more light” beyond Webb’s Monitor by offering explanations of symbols, biblical references, and the evolution of Capitular degrees within Freemasonry. It also includes the governance and procedural elements for forming new chapters, installation ceremonies, and appendices with sample documents. The volume thus serves as both a reference work for Royal Arch Masonry and a guide to the rituals that accompany the four degrees.
