[1760] First edition, as listed in Gaskell Group One. Hardcover, Good. Bound in full black leather (Morocco), probably the original binding. Gold patterned border on the boards; the name B. DOWDESWELL in the centre, tooled upside-down on front and reverse. Raised bands, with gold decorations in all 6 panels of the spine. Boards are bumped with use to corners and spine, with some rubbing to front, reverse and raised bands on spine. Binding strong. Marbled endpapers. Prelims with various annotations and additions as follows: Front pastedown has small old library sticker, mostly illegible but including the words Divinity Shelf; no. 48 ; also a pasted piece of paper signed B. Codington (see below) with the date 1738; and a newspapers cutting containing a prayer found in the papers of The late Sir Robert Peel . Attached to the fep, 6pp. of handwritten prayers on blue letter paper, dated 1877. On the fep the exlibris label of Ann Ridler. On the reverse an ownership inscription relating to the cover name Bridget Dowdeswell, and a pasted Latin prayer. On the following fep a handwritten prayer dated 1886; on the following fep a pasted printed Prayer on the death of C. W. dated 1845; verso has handwritten undated verse. Inserted then a single page of ink writing dated 1815, then two more printed prayers, the second dated 1879. On the next fep a written quotation from Walter Scott 1832, dated 1855.; on the verso an undated newspaper cutting titled Birthplace of Baskerville . Title page with Baskerville's 'lozenge and star' border and price of the book printed at the bottom of the title page is Six shillings and Six Pence, unbound . Text is in a single column, with decorative border around the text. Unpaginated, signature lettering A through to Qq, including the occasional prayers and Articles. Final endpapers have insertion of an undated, but addressed, letter and a paste in of the Proper Psalms for holy days, both mid-Victorian. Occasional pencil underlinings in the text. Otherwise contents clean and bright. Bridget Dowdeswell was the daughter of Sir William Codrington, 1st Baronet (died 1738), of Dodington Park, Gloucestershire, a British landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1737 to 1738. In 1747 she married William Dowdeswell PC (12 March 1721 6 February 1775) a British politician who was a leader of the Rockingham Whig faction.
