Full title as follows: "The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of England; Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as They are to be Sung or Said in Churches: and the Form or Manner of Making, Ordaining and Consecrating of Bishops, Priests and Deacons". LARGE FOLIO VOLUME (40 x 25cm). Bound in FULL LEATHER (calf), with gilt-stamped design to front & rear boards & spine compartments, gilt lettering to spine, raised bands, marbled pastedowns. Text printed in two ruled columns, in large type, with some pictorial vignette chapter capitals. Engraved added pictorial title as frontispiece: white pillar building with "Domus Orationis" above entrance. The Book of Common Prayer is the official service book of the Church of England. The first vernacular edition of the book was issued in 1549 per an act of parliament in the same year. Newcombe (Newcomb) & Hills were given the patent of King's printer in 1675 "for the printing of all bibles, new testaments, books of common prayer - - -". Their patent expired in 1739. Unpaginated (366pp + 23pp + 2pp). Full pagination details as follows: blank, frontispiece (engraved title page), title page, contents page, unpaginated main section (366pp), articles of religion; & constitutions & canons (23pp), table (2pp), blank. Closed tears & moderately edgeworn pages throughout, covers rubbed & worn, front hinge a little tender (but holding), one page half lacking (p.335/336), frontispiece plate with closed tears & large chips (not affecting plate), minimal light foxing, 1/3 of two separate pages in handwritten manuscript to recto & verso (p.21/22 & p.38) added in on contemporary paper where page was lacking/torn, a couple of pages with old tape repairs & small portions of text lacking, otherwise a tight solid complete copy. Large heavy volume, extra shipping may be required. Uncommon early-18th century folio copy.
