Contemporary black leather binding with elaborate blind and gilt decoration to boards; gilt ornamental borders; raised/decorated spine compartments with gilt title COMMON PRAYER; gilt page edges. With engraved frontispiece “The Holy Family”, after Sir Joshua Reynolds, National Gallery. Of particular provenance interest, the front blank contains a manuscript family ownership record with several names and dates beginning in 1835, continuing through the 19th century, and with a later family annotation dated 1963. Condition: Fair. Binding substantially rubbed and worn with losses to leather and gilt at extremities, corners and spine; surface scuffing and cracking commensurate with age. Internally with general age toning, scattered foxing, spotting and staining. Front inner hinge/gutter weakened/separating as photographed. Manuscript ownership inscriptions to front blank. Text remains legible. Engraved frontispiece present. A visually appealing and characterful early Victorian prayer book with notable multi-generational provenance.
