Interesting bible, bound with the Book of Common Prayer and a Concordance, all enhanced by the inclusion of numerous plates published by Richard Ware "to bind up with all sorts of House bibles" and "curiously engraved by J Cole from designs of ye best masters". This arrangement (though with different engravings) noted by Herbert for a 1723 Bible (965) but not recorded for this slightly later publication. We have The Book Of Common Prayer together with the Psalter, printed by John Baskett (1739) preceded by additional 2pp engraved title page and royal portrait (George II) both from Richard Ware. Thereafter The Holy Bible Containing The Old And New Testaments (John Baskett, 1738) preceded by two engraved Ware titles as noted above. Numerous plates placed throughout the text, each a full page with four engraved images illustrating key Biblical verses. The Apocrypha follows, without title, while the New Testament has its own title page. The volume concludes with an index and the Concordance (R Ware, 1739). Letters from 1962 laid in detailing provenance, the Bible being in the same family since publication and until this sale. It was professionally restored "by a bookbinder in York" and rebound in black leather in 1908. Internally the volume is much repaired and this generally of a good, if always visible, standard. There is toning and marking throughout and much ink notation (handwriting practice, ownership notes, etc) to the blank versos of plates, with less frequent notation to text. Half black leather and black cloth, all a little worn, with four raised bands and bright gilt titling to spine. Large 8vo (c.210 x 255mm). An uncommon compilation with a good provenance. Oxford. John Baskett, Printer to the University. MDCCXXVI (1726). Large 8vo. Two volumes handsomely bound in 20th century quarter tan calf, marbled boards with new endpapers. Volume I contains Prayers and Psalms with the Old Testament from Genesis to Lamentations. Bordered title page to Common prayer lacks small portion to bottom corner, contents to reverse of title page, A2 - [G6], Title page to Holy Bible, A2- [Oo7]. Frontis. + 53 plates to Vol. I. Volume II contains end of Lamentations to Revelations plus An Index in two columns and the Brief Concordance mentioned above. Oo8-Uu4, Apocrypha; A-K7, New Testament; Title Page, dated 1725, A2- [O4], Indes to Bible; A-E3. Concordance; Title Page, A2-[I4]. Frontis. + 81 plates. 136 plates in total. Pages are lightly browned and also there is foxing along margins. Vol I: small window holes, about an inch across and half a inch wide to text on leaves F4 and F5 affecting text to Psalm and Prayers to be Used at Sea. Corner of plate in Judges missing not affecting illustrations. Close tear to bottom margin of plate of David and Bathsheba, not affecting illustration. In Vol. II there is a thumb hole to edge of illustration of Christ reeciving the Little Children. Minor loses or close tears to a few margins, many professionally repaired.
