Chapters divided under the headings: Work and Workers in the Educational Field; Work on Behalf of the Slave; Work and Workers in the Mission Field; Prison Reform and "The Poor Are Always With Us.". As well as the lives you might expect such as William Wilberforce there are others such as the nurser Sister Dora, Dorothy Wyndlow Pattison, who was an important figure in Walsall, Staffordshire, where hospitals continue to be named after her. Illustrated with woodcuts. Some minor rubbing on edges. Presentation inscription front endpaper. Inside some foxing, two pages near rear have been untidily re tipped in with old tape.
