London: Printed for Sir Richard Phillips and Co. [by Shackell and Arrowsmith] and to be had of all booksellers, 1823. 12mo. (measures 7 x 4.9 inches approx.). iv,[ii],454; 18pp.,(+24pp. undated publisher's catalogue 'Practical System of Useful and Liberal Education' of W. Lewis, Printer, 21, Finch Lane, Cornhill). With 85 plates, comprising: frontispiece, 72 further plates of tradesmen, & 12 plates of machinery & mechanical diagrams. §Collates identically to BL copy (the sole copy in JISC - formerly Copac) with the exception of the W. Lewis catalogue which is not present there; & 84 plates in BL copy as opposed to 85 here. Contents leaf (pp.[v-vi]) misnumbered. All but six of the chapters on the individual trades are prefaced with an engraved plate (that of one of the six - The merchant - being the frontispiece here). Originally published in 1818, later editions were expanded. Contemporary calf, gilt edging, with professional twentieth century reback, gilt lettering & decoration, original endpapers preserved. Some minor browning, offsetting of plates, the occasional stain; in all other respects a very good copy, neat & sound. …
