Often called “The Socrates of San Francisco”― Howard Luck Gossage was one of the most original and influential figures in the history of advertising. Emerging in the 1950s and 1960s, Gossage was a copywriter and creative thinker who rejected traditional advertising norms, blending sharp wit, cultural critique, and social conscience. Working out of a converted firehouse in San Francisco, he pioneered conversational advertising, famously using humor and self-awareness to sell products while questioning the very nature of persuasion itself.
Gossage introduced Marshall McLuhan to a wider audience, helped found Friends of the Earth, and played a catalytic role in several socially driven movements of the era. Named one of the Top 100 Ad People of the 20th Century, and his ideas continue to shape creative advertising today.
