'Illustrated by upwards of two hundred woodcuts from designs principally by Harrison Weir, and eleven coloured illustrations from water-colour sketches mostly by the same artist. With a Chapter on Ferns'. Lacks colour frontispiece of Scarlet Lory, Leadbeater Cockatoo, Green and Grey Parrots. pp. xiv, 832, bound in 1/4 grained calf over embossed cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover, gilt decoration and title to spine. Condition of binding is poor, spine is brittle with some missing portions with repairs, hinges repaired amateurishly, fragile but holding, title page in facsimile, A couple of plates have small marginal tears without loss, some text pages with age discoloration although foxing is minimal. A very rare title and, apart from the binding, in an acceptable and usable condition. The scope of the contents is very broad, reflecting Victorian interests in a wide range of pets and domestic animals. The monochrome woodcut text vignettes are prolific and of good quality. The book was compiled and published by Samuel Orchart Beeton, (Mrs. Beeton's husband). Size: 8vo.
