Large 4to. 50 pp. of Hebrew text and notes (English), printed in colours and read from right to left, followed by 24 pp. of Egyptological material from the same series (German). Bound in contemporary brown marbled boards, a simple but sturdy utilitarian binding typical of academic use rather than display.

This volume forms Part 17 of The Sacred Books of the Old Testament, the monumental late 19th century project edited by Paul Haupt, bringing together leading European and American scholars to produce a fully critical Hebrew Bible. Siegfrieds edition of Job is one of the most technically ambitious in the series, with its colour coded textual layers and dense philological apparatus.

PROVENANCE
What distinguishes this copy is its exceptional provenance. Affixed to the front endpaper is the engraved ex libris of Revd Dr Hermann Adler, designed by the British Jewish artist Frank Lewis Emanuel (1865 1948). The bookplate with its crowned double headed eagle and priestly hands in blessing is one of the most striking examples of Anglo Jewish heraldic design of the period. Adler served as Chief Rabbi of the British Empire from 1891 to 1911, and was referred to by King Edward VII himself as my Chief Rabbi, a remark that evolved into the nickname the Kings Rabbi.

The presence of Adlers bookplate in this scholarly edition is entirely fitting. His personal library was known for its emphasis on critical biblical scholarship, and this volume would have been part of his working collection during a period of intense public and intellectual activity. A later CANCELLED library stamp indicates subsequent institutional ownership and legitimate deaccession from The Jews College (The central training institution for Anglo Jewish ministers and teachers) giving the book a layered and well documented chain of custody.
