Octavo, 9 x 6.25", cream cloth with red lettering to front cover, 158 pp (including a section of advertisements at the end), plus blank memorandum leaves. A scarce Alabama community cookbook. Recipes are attributed, and include southern staples, Creole recipes (i.e. French gumbo soup and Louisiana gumbo file), and rice recipes (i.e. southern rice, rice snowballs), plus recipes for spiced boneless pig feet, stuffed pigeon, Texas Baked Irish Potatoes, and more. A beverages section, meanwhile, contains six recipes for alcoholic drinks. This copy belonged to J.C. Reynolds of Marion (inscribed to front pastedown), who contributed recipes to the book, including one for fish croquettes. Laid into the book are various cooking related scraps, including 11 leaves of handwritten recipes, such as brownies, green tomato pickle, and watermelon rind preserves. Also present on blank pages at the end of the book are an additional 10 pages of manuscript recipes, including brandy peaches, Mrs. Oliver Fawlke's Cake, and Mrs. Long's Baked Custard. Two in OCLC. Wear, staining and discoloration to covers, front hinge cracked, staining, soiling, and spattering to pages, most severe to pages 60 to 115.
