About this Item
"This magnificent map of the United States presents an eye-catching composition that commemorates many of America's greatest writers up to the mid-20th century. Dozens of vignettes representing famous books, characters, plays, and locations are dotted throughout the image; including the Glass Menagerie, a soldier with a 'Red Badge of Courage', a galloping Ichabod Crane, and the Joad's iconic 1926 Hudson Super Six from The Grapes of Wrath. Portraits of Irving, Cooper, Emerson, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Poe, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman, and Twain look on approvingly. Inset maps along the bottom of the sheet highlight the literary history of Boston, Chicago, and New York. Numerous works - over 100 in total - are identified in green and red ink, with an emphasis on contemporary popular literature. Corresponding authors are labeled in black, almost apparently as an afterthought. The listed luminaries include a variety of published individuals ranging from Andy Adams to Woodrow Wilson. Many, such as Albert Einstein, and Lafcadio Hearn, were immigrants. The insightful image was designed and illustrated by Amy Jones, a popular 20th-century artist and muralist best known for her watercolors. The map was published in New York by the R.R. Bowker Company in 1949. Mounted on linen by the Denoyer-Geppert Company of Chicago, probably for use in an educational institution.
