About this Item
Bookplate for the Library of Mr. A. Houbigant. Armand-Gustave Houbigant grew up in the home of the famous perfumer Jean-Francois Houbigant (1752-1807) whose clients included Madame du Barry and Marie Antoinette. He was an erudite historian but spent most of his time in drawing and the art of engraving. He despised the ugliness of playing cards so designed a set known as dames de France (1816) This bookplate has a quote from Horace with a woman reading from a table with an oil lamp. The plate measuring 57 x 69 mm. was identified by Percy Neville Barnett whose collection is in the Auchland Museum. Seller Inventory # 027994
