Bookplates. Sizes ranging from 2" x 2.75" to 3.875 x 4.75". 11 leaves of bookplates, 2 of which of are Fass's own plate; and one of those is a very small book-label with two copies on one larger sheet. Additional bookplates for William and Helena Hand, Octavia Perusse, Darthula Wilcox, Stanley Jones, Norman Markwell, Pierpont Morgan Library, and the Library of Art Students' League of New York. One label "Twelve Designs / Done in Color / by / T. M. Cleland." All are fine except Perusse which has a small crease to the bottom corner and is nearly fine. Among the most unsung of mid-century printers, John Stroble Fass produced some exquisite books both from his Harbor Press, Hell-Box Press, and his final, "off-hours enterprise," the Hammer Creek Press. Fass was deeply enmeshed in the world of print and book design, from job- and private printing to undertaking the print work for Madison Avenue advertising agencies. He was close friends with John DePol, Burton Carnes, and Valenti Angelo and he traveled in the same circles as giants like Bruce Rogers and William Edwin Rudge. In fact, he worked for Rudge alongside of Rogers at the beginning of his career?what better apprenticeship! Ephemera like this is quite uncommon to find in commerce, much less in quantity.
